Possum Yarn - an Overview for the New User.
Possum fibre is never sold in a 100% pure form because its very short staple does not allow a possum-only spin. Instead, possum fibre is mixed with one or more carrier fibres whose functions are to provide strength and spring. While a number of fibres have been mixed with possum, the most successful are merino lambswool and silk. For various technical reasons, some spinners prefer to work with a higher percentage of possum, and some with a lower. Where the correct ratio of possum is mixed with merino lambswool, the wool provides both the spring and the strength. If the possum ratio increases then it becomes necessary to augment the mix with silk because there is no longer enough lambswool to provide the necessary strength. In the final analysis, the
mix employed is down to the preferences of the spinner.
The aim of all possum spinners is to provide a mix in which the possum dominates. Experience dictates that here should be no less that 15% and no more than 45% possum in the mix. If there is less than 15% the possum adds nothing. If there is more than 45% the yarn becomes unstable. All the yarns we sell sit in the so called Goldilocks Zone where the mix is just right, and the feel of the possum is the dominant characteristic.
Possum Plus is designed to last beyond a single season, and to be the stalwart in every knitter’s stash. It bridges the gap between the reliability of the best wool and the luxury of cashmere. Garments knitted in Possum Plus are soft yet strong, delicate yet durable, and perfect for an enormous range of traditional knitting proje
The key to the yarn’s qualities lies in the possum fibre which is hollow, making it a natural heat exchanger. The millions of fibres woven through the yarn combine to regulate the wearer’s body heat, a quality which has made it the knitwear of choice for ramblers, golfers, hill walkers, fisherfolk and countless others out and about in New Zealand and Australia. When the wearer is cool, the possum traps heat, warming her. When too warm. the possum fibres vent the excess heat into the atmosphere, maintaining her at a pleasant ambient temperature. Nature at its most inventive!
